Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens features a variety of activities for the whole family. Allow your children to play on one of the six playgrounds, such as the dinosaur and space-themed areas, or fly model airplanes in the nearby fields.
Fishing is a prominent activity at the park on the banks of Meadow Lake. The lake is 84 acres and allows visitors to barbecue, picnic, boat and sail. Meadow Lake is home to the American Small Craft Association that offers sailing and boating lessons in the summer and fall months. Tennis enthusiasts can watch a variety of tennis games that are held at the park's National Tennis Center, which is home to the United States Open tennis championships.
The Adirondack National Park in northeast New York covers over 6.1 million acres. Visitors can participate year-round in recreational activities that include hiking, mountain biking, fishing and snowshoeing. Enjoy the park's more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails that wind their way through quiet areas away from roads and settlements. Fishing is another favorite recreational activity in the area as the park offers over 3,000 lakes and 30,000 miles of streams and rivers. Visit Harris Lake, which offers an abundance of fishing, canoeing, kayaking and camping opportunities. Walleye, northern pike, yellow perch and bass are examples of the many fish that can be caught in the lake.
The park also has reintroduced animals to the region, which can be viewed by hikers and fishermen. The American beaver, the moose, the American marten and Canadian lynx are some of the protected species that can be found throughout the park.
Monroe County lies in the northwestern area New York and includes cities and towns such as Rochester, Fairport and Perinton. The county offers a number of golf courses that are challenging for both beginner and advanced golfers. The Latta Lea Golf Club is a family-oriented public course that caters to both adults and young children. The course is a par 3 and takes approximately 90 minutes to complete; it features holes that are up to 140 yards in length. Latta Lea also offers summer golf camps, lessons, leagues, a clubhouse and practice putting greens.
The Eagle Vale Golf Course in the town of Fairport offers an 18-hole championship course. Before playing the course, practice at Eagle Vale's driving range that features 33 stalls or on their large undulating putting green. After a challenging game, relax at the course's restaurant, the Argyle Grill. The restaurant serves a large selection of American fare and seafood cuisines and offers outdoor seating overlooking the golf course.
The Island Valley Golf Course, also in Fairport, features a regulation-length championship course. Island Valley has been in operation since 1960 and offers nine holes that challenge golfers with a variety of sand traps and rough areas. The course also offers reasonable daily rates for seniors and juniors and riding and pull cart rentals.
New York's Finger Lakes is located in the center of the state and is named after numerous glacier-like lakes that formed in the area. The lakes lie in a parallel north-south position, and some of the largest measure up to 40 miles long and 3 1/2 miles wide. The Finger Lakes offer an abundance of water activities such as jet-skiing, boating, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, as well as many fishing and hiking opportunities.
After exploring the waters of the Finger Lakes, consider relaxing at one of the area's wineries. Finger Lakes is the largest wine region of New York state and offers well-known Chardonnays, Rieslings and Pinot Noirs.
