International Air Travel Luggage Information

International luggage allowances differ by airline. When traveling internationally, luggage has specific quantity, weight and size restrictions. While information about luggage can be found on each airline's website, it is always recommended to call the airline before a flight to get the most current information.
  1. Quantity

    • Most airlines allow two pieces of luggage to be checked free of cost. In addition, each passenger is allowed one small piece of luggage and a personal item as part of their carry-on luggage allowance. Personal items include a backpack, purse, computer bag, briefcase or diaper bag.

    Weight

    • Most airlines checked baggage weight requirements for economy class is up to 50 pounds per bag, free of cost. Business class and first class passengers are allowed higher weight limits. More international airlines accept baggage for check-in weighing up to 70 pounds; an excess baggage fee will be charged. Carry-on luggage and personal items must weigh no more than 40 pounds each.

    Size

    • The standard size restriction for checked-in baggage is 62 linear inches. The size restriction for carry-on baggage is 45 linear inches. All carry-on baggage must either fit in the overhead luggage compartment or underneath the passenger seat.
