Over 100 years ago, Sag Harbor was a thriving port and whaling town. The sheltered waters of Sag Harbor Bay and Sag Harbor Cove served an international group of sailors who hunted whales, alongside the locals, who earned good wages for this dangerous work. The Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum shows how Sag Harbor residents lived, worked and played in days gone by. This maritime museum displays not only whaling artifacts, but also many tools, household items and even children's toys, donated or loaned by local residents, some of which date from the 18th century. It opens every day from the middle of May to October between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m, Monday to Saturday and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Large groups can be accommodated by prior arrangement.
