TSA Guidelines for Laptops

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a subdivision of the Department of Homeland Security that was created after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The organization enforces strict guidelines for checked and carry-on luggage for all passenger aircraft.
  1. History

    • Before Aug. 16, 2008, the TSA required all laptops be removed from their carrying cases, prior to X-ray screening.

    Present

    • Laptops are forbidden from being packed in checked luggage, but they can remain in "checkpoint-friendly" bags as carry-on luggage.

    Significance

    • Companies, such as Targus, now sell TSA-approved laptop carrying cases in "butterfly style," "trifold style" and "sleeve style."

    Function

    • Acceptable laptop bags do not have zippers, pockets or compartments above or below the laptop itself that obstruct the X-ray view of the inside of the laptop.

    Benefits

    • The screening process goes more quickly and smoothly because travelers will not have to unpack their laptops at Security.

    Drawbacks

    • Travelers will have to buy new laptop carrying cases, which may be thinner and require a separate bag for laptop accessories.
