Before Aug. 16, 2008, the TSA required all laptops be removed from their carrying cases, prior to X-ray screening.
Laptops are forbidden from being packed in checked luggage, but they can remain in "checkpoint-friendly" bags as carry-on luggage.
Companies, such as Targus, now sell TSA-approved laptop carrying cases in "butterfly style," "trifold style" and "sleeve style."
Acceptable laptop bags do not have zippers, pockets or compartments above or below the laptop itself that obstruct the X-ray view of the inside of the laptop.
The screening process goes more quickly and smoothly because travelers will not have to unpack their laptops at Security.
Travelers will have to buy new laptop carrying cases, which may be thinner and require a separate bag for laptop accessories.
