What Can I Carry on International Flights?

When travelling on international flights, most airlines will allow you to carry one piece of hand luggage and a personal item such as a laptop or briefcase onto the plane with you.
  1. Size

    • Typically, the overall dimensions for carry-on luggage are approximately 45 inches. However, specific airlines vary in their size restrictions so it is always best to check with the airline you are travelling with.

    Weight

    • The weight of your carry-on luggage is also restricted and depending on the airline you are travelling with it can range from 10 pounds to 50 pounds.

    Contents

    • In addition to one carry-on bag and one personal item, essential medical equipment, mobility aids and pushchairs are also permitted to be carried on board once they have passed security screening. You are limited to no more than 3 ounces per liquid container and all toiletry items must be sealed in a quart-size transparent plastic bag. One lighter without fuel is also permitted per person and all liquids regardless of size that have been bought in the duty-free area of the airport can also be taken on board.

    Warnings

    • Make sure you know exactly what the airline's regulations are because if you are over the weight or size limit with hand baggage it will have to be checked-in, which will incur a charge. Similarly, liquids over 3 ounces will have to be checked in or thrown away.
