Upper Michigan Remote Weather Stations

Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS), managed by the National Interagency Fire Center, are solar-powered units placed in remote areas to collect hourly data for environmental issues including fire, climatology, flood warnings and air quality. There are approximately 1,850 units located within the United States, with 15 in Upper Michigan. These units cost approximately $13,000 each and transmit information by satellite. Due to the remote locations, the units can only be reached by all-terrain vehicles, helicopters or foot.
