What was Pedro Alvares Cabral known for as an explorer?

He discovered Brazil (1500). During Pedro's 2nd trip to India, while following Bartolomeu Dias' new route around the Cape of Good Hope, Brazil was "spotted." The Portuguese expedition landed and claimed South America and the Brazilian coast for Portuguese control in 1500. He returned from Lisbon to Portugal later that year after further exploring areas of eastern South America including what would become Uruguay and Argentina on July 3rd, 1501.
