Free Things to Do in New York City During Christmas

New York City is one of the most gorgeous cities in the world, especially during the holiday season. Although sometimes expensive, there are a few great things to do and see that are completely free during the Christmas season.
  1. Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center

    • This is a nationally televised tree lighting, and is also one of the biggest attractions of the holiday season. The lighting takes place at the beginning of December, and the tree stays lit through January. If you're not able to make it to the lighting, it is still an extravagant site to see.

    UNICEF Snowflake Lighting Ceremony

    • Located on Fifth Avenue in New York City, this event is at 6 p.m. every Friday from around Thanksgiving to mid-January. During the ceremony there is live music, hot chocolate and snowflake-shaped cookies.

    Visit Santa Claus at Macy's

    • This is a wonderful event at the Macy's in Herald Square. This is the most popular Santa Claus visiting site in New York City and the setting for the classic Christmas movie "Miracle on 34th Street."

    Go Window Shopping

    • Christmastime is the best time of year for window shopping in New York City. Almost every window has a gorgeous display set up, helping to get you into the Christmas spirit.
