Sign in at the front counter and grab a newspaper from the communal stack at the front counter to read on the outside porch while you wait. The restaurant holds about 50 people, but it’s usually full, especially on weekends. Kiss the Cook doesn’t take reservations, and is only open for breakfast and lunch. The decor is part Grandma’s attic, part antique store.
Dress casually. Workout clothes, baseball caps, shorts and jeans are all fine. There’s no need to put on airs here; this is a come-as-you-are kind of place. In good weather, wait outside on the wraparound porch. You may strike up a conversation with a group of bicyclists who make this a favorite Saturday morning breakfast stop, or a motorcycle club stopping by for a meal on their way out of town.
Opt for homemade biscuits and gravy, or thick sliced French toast for breakfast. The pecan roll is a can’t miss, as are the pancakes. You can also try the corned beef hash omelet, served with home fries and miniature muffins, or a make-your-own omelet, choosing from a dozen or so ingredients. There’s a selection of pastries and hot and cold cereals for lighter appetites, too. Most breakfast options are about $7.
Try a cup of homemade chili or soup at lunchtime with a turkey or chicken salad sandwich at lunchtime, or select one of the big burgers served with fries or slaw. Lunch entrees average $8. There are also meal-sized salads and low-carb plates. Finish with an ice cream sundae or piece of homebaked pie for dessert. If there’s still room, snag a homemade cookie from the basket at the front counter, or lay in a supply of licorice whips and hard candy for the trip home.
