How to Make a Yabbie Net

The yabbie, or yabby, is native to Australia and lives in freshwater environments like streams, rivers and reservoirs. Their coloring varies from black to blueish to brown beige. Much like fishing, catching yabbies in a river is a popular activity. These lobster-like crustaceans are fairly simple to catch and can be eaten just like crayfish in salads, pasta or with simple condiments. Catching a yabbies requires a simple net that can be made quickly and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a strip of poultry netting 2 to 3 feet long and roll it into a cylinder so about 6 inches of netting overlap. Secure the netting with zip ties.

    • 2

Flatten and fold over one end of the netting so it is closed.

    • 3

Cinch the open end of the cylinder with string so it makes a narrow opening 6 to 8 inches in diameter.

    • 4

Tie a 1-lb. weight to the open end of the net.

    • 5

Tie two lengths of rope to either side of the open end. These lengths of rope should be long enough for you to pull the trap out of the water when it is full.
