Plan your departure and travel time wisely. If you are flying, get to the airport at least 2 hours prior to your flight. Elderly travelers have often had knees replaced and will set off the metal detectors when going through security. If you are driving, plan to stop every hour or so for short breaks for stretching and using the restroom.

    • 2

Choose a vacation where the older travelers can keep up. Most elderly people cannot walk long distances, are a little unsteady on their feet and tire more easily. Watch out for trips which require a lot of walking, especially on old cobblestone streets through historical sites. If there will be significant walking, make sure there is somewhere to sit for anyone who wants to relax and walk less.

    • 3

Pick the right accommodations. Make sure the room will meet the needs of the older travelers, especially if travelling outside the United States. Check ahead to make sure there is an elevator if you're not staying on the ground floor.

    • 4

Discuss what to do if you get separated. If you are on a tour bus, instruct the older travelers to get on the tour bus and go if it's departure time, even if they can't find you. It will be easier for you to get back to your hotel if you get left behind.

    • 5

Carry water and snacks when touring. Many older people have medications they must take on schedule with liquids or food. Prepare for this and your trip will be less stressful.

    • 6

Enjoy the time together and remember this is a vacation, not a marathon.
