Can you give two dates of when the Thames froze over?
-
2nd January 1963 to 5th March 1963. This famous freeze resulted from a prolonged period of cold weather across most of the UK, especially in the south. Minimum air temperatures in London’s St. James Park fell to -8.3 Celsius, on the 2nd of February. The ice started to break up on the 4th of March.
- 11th-14th January 1814. Although the winter of 1813-14 produced a hard and prolonged freeze, the river in London did not completely freeze over, partly because of the effect of the tide. The ice was at its greatest extent on the 14th of January when the river was crossed with relative ease between Westminster and Waterloo.
