Zanzibar is an island 27 kilometers off the mainland. Famed for its scuba diving sites, the island also boasts Stone Town, an architectural mix of Indian, Omani and African design.
Only accessible by boat, Mahale is known as a vital sanctuary for the wild chimpanzee. Primate researchers have been working in Mahale since the 1960s and numerous other species reside in the park's area.

The Hadza are the last known group who live solely from hunting and gathering. Using a click language similar to the San in Namibia, the Hadza live in the Lake Eyasi region.
