According to the Tanzania Tourist Board, tourism represented 16 percent of the GDP in 2009. Tanzania has constructed a number of new hotels in recent years to accommodate the growing number of tourists.
Despite the recession, domestic tourism has been increasing significantly due to active promotional campaigns about visitor attractions and culture by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
Over 95 percent of Tanzania's 950,000 annual tourists visit wildlife areas. Tanzania Invest reports that Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has said that the country must develop its coastline and beaches to attract more tourists to that area.
