The concept of a city farm originated in Europe more than 50 years ago, and the not-for-profit Cityfarm Edmonton operates with the same ideals--to provide nutritive food, education about farms and animals and to strengthen community gardening skills. Children visiting Cityfarm can participate in a variety of activities, such as feeding the chickens, building community projects on the farm, harvesting and vegetables and learning about growing cycles. Cityfarm also sponsors the Little Green Thumbs program, which brings gardens to schools. The gardens are cared for by students, teachers and Cityfarm advisers. Before visiting, make sure to call ahead to the farm. Dress appropriately for the weather, bring a lunch and prepare to play in the dirt.

Several of the attractions, like Galaxyland and Ice Palace, have special Toddler Time programs for younger children. Children can learn about marine life at the Sea Life Caverns underground aquarium or the Sea Lions' Rock. There is a week-long day-camp in summer that gives children hands-on experience with the marine life. Parents can also arrange for their children to become Trainer for a Day and shadow an animal trainer. Kids can hone their skateboarding and rollerblading skills at the indoor West 49 & Skateboard Park. Multipasses are available for monthly or yearly visits to all the attractions at West Edmonton Mall.
