U.S.–Mexico Border Wall: History & Status

The U.S. has built physical barriers along parts of the 1,954-mi border since 1990:

  • 1994: First 14-mi fence (San Diego sector) under Clinton.
  • 2006 Secure Fence Act: Mandated 700 mi of fencing (Bush).
  • 2017–2021: Trump administration built ~450 mi of new/replacement wall (steel bollard, 18–30 ft).
  • 2021–present: Biden halted construction; funds redirected; some gaps remediated.

Debate

Proponents: Deters illegal entry, channels traffic to ports, enhances security.
Critics: Ineffective (ladders, tunnels), environmental harm, property seizures, symbolic hostility to Mexico, cost ($15–25M/mi).

~700 mi now have some barrier; rest is natural (Rio Grande, mountains) or unfenced. No continuous "wall" exists.
