How did Peru gets its name?

There are several theories about how Peru got its name. One theory is that it comes from the Quechua word "Birú" which means river like some sort of snake or the sound of the water. Another theory connects the name to the indigenous tribe known as the Wiru or Huari. The origin most commonly accepted is that it comes from the word Berú, the name given to the powerful Chimú ruler.
