What does the word Hawaii mean?
"Hawaiʻi" is derived from Proto-Oceanic *Sawaiki/Hawaiki, reconstructed as "*Sāviki", the legendary homeland to all Polynesian people. Other proposed etymologies, such as Hawaiki meaning "*divided land"* have not garnered any serious support in academia.
