Golf is often one of the first activities that comes to mind when you think of retirement, and Oviedo has its share of golf courses. Seniors can enjoy a day on the greens at courses such as the one at Twin Rivers Golf Club. This 6,600-yard par 72 championship golf course is semiprivate and offers public play as well. The club also includes practice facilities, a golf shop and an on-site restaurant called the Grill Room. Special rates are offered for couples as well as families, and services for those with disabilities are also available.
The Casselberry Senior Center in Oviedo is the host of the Hoedowners Square Dance Club, which meets every Sunday at the center from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and offers classes and workshops. The club offers regular square-dance lessons as well as Western square dancing. Instructors are available as is DVD instruction, and both singles and couples are welcome.
Oviedo is home to many clubs and organizations in which seniors can take part, with a multitude of activities at their fingertips. This includes the Oviedo Garden Club, the Oviedo Optimist Club, the Oviedo Historical Society, the Oviedo Rotary Club and the Kiwanis Club of Oviedo. The different clubs have scheduled meetings at different times throughout the year and participate in a variety of community events. Clubs such as the Garden Club also take part in community beautification by planting shrubs, flowers and trees at local parks and cemeteries.
Volunteering can be a good way to meet new people, provide a service and also feel appreciated. Hospitals are always looking for volunteers and those in Oviedo are no exception. Winterpark Hospital is just 11 miles outside of Oviedo and Florida Hospital in Orlando is just 15 miles away. Both facilities have volunteer opportunities and host a variety of volunteer orientation seminars throughout the year. Volunteers provide services such as delivering mail, flowers, books and newspapers to patients in the hospital as well as helping out in hospital gift shops and information desks.
