Unofficial Universal Hollywood Tips

Universal Studios Hollywood is a Los Angeles theme park for tourists and locals alike. Whether you're planning your first trip to Universal Studios or a return visit, insider tips will enhance your enjoyment of the park.
  1. Studio Tour and Lower Lot

    • One of the must-see attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood is the studio tour, which takes you on a 45-minute tram tour of the studio back lot. The final studio tour of the day is generally a few hours before the park closes, so it's a good idea to do the studio tour early and explore other areas of the park afterward. In addition, rides and attractions on the lower lot (accessible via a series of escalators) close earlier than those on the upper lot, so it makes sense to explore those attractions earlier in the day as well.

    Parking vs. Transit

    • Parking at Universal Studios Hollywood can be quite expensive, but local transit may be an option. The Los Angeles Metro Red Line, in fact, takes passengers directly to the theme park, which is one stop beyond the Hollywood and Highland subway stop. Upon arriving at the Universal Studios stop, simply climb the stairs out of the subway station to street level, and walk to the demarcated pick-up area across the street. There, a tram will pick you up and deliver you directly to the park entrance. Trams run regularly throughout the day.

    Food and Drink

    • Food inside the theme park can be expensive, so it is a good idea to bring a lunch. If you're concerned about carrying food around with you all day, locker rentals are available where you can store personal belongings. If you do plan to dine at one of the park's restaurants, "all you can eat" passes are money-savers for those with big appetites. The summer months can be quite hot, and you'll need to stay hydrated. Bottled water and drinks are available, but cost significantly more than they would cost in a supermarket. So it's a good idea to bring a backpack with your own bottled water. Empty water bottles can be refilled at water fountains, located throughout the park.

    VIP Experience

    • If money is no object, the best way to experience Universal Studios Hollywood is with a VIP pass. The VIP Experience, billed as "the ultimate Hollywood private guided tour," includes valet parking, a gourmet lunch in the park's VIP dining room and reserved seating at all shows. The best part, however, is the front-of-line privileges -- you'll be whisked to the front of the line for any ride, regardless of how many people are waiting ahead of you.
