Family Events in South Carolina

More than 400 festivals are held annually in South Carolina. Holiday events such as Veteran's Day parades and the more localized events such as the Chicken Bog cook-off offer entertainment for all ages.

  1. Veterans Day Parade

    • Held in Columbia every year on Nov. 11, the Veterans Day Parade features marching high school bands, military equipment, groups from around South Carolina as well as a military fly-over. The parade starts just before 11 a.m. at Laurel and Sumter streets and continues down south Gervais Street.

    July Fourth Festival

    • North Charleston holds an annual Fourth of July festival at Riverfront Park with free admission. Local and national artists performers. There are food vendors as well as children's games and play area. The festival begins in the afternoon and ends with a fireworks display and celebration.

    Bog-Off Festival

    • Located in Loris, the Bog-Off Festival has been entertaining guests for more than 30 years. The festival, scheduled every third Saturday in October, entertains with a parade, fireworks, concert, arts and crafts, and a children's pavilion. The festival's main focus is a cook-off in which contestants serve up a southern dish called chicken bog, a concoction of chicken, rice, sausage, and onions.

    Egg Scramble Jamboree

    • The Egg Scramble Jamboree in Lamar is held at the end of March through April 2 and offers activities for the entire family. Kids will like the carnival rides and games. A classic car show, beauty pageant, rodeo, parade and a community dance are also associated with the jamboree. Food and arts and crafts vendors are plentiful. Admission is free.

    Myrtle Beach

    • The annual Taste of the Coast, located at Barefoot Landing of Myrtle Beach, is an event for the entire family. Local restaurants offer samples of their best cuisines, local musicians provide the entertainment, and a "kid zone" offers games, activities, pony rides, a balloon artist and face painters. A food drive during the event benefits the North Strand Helping Hand, an emergency aid organization for the less fortunate.
