Knoxville is a city located in eastern Tennessee. It is the home to the University of Tennessee and one of the largest cities in the state. The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority runs two airports in the city: McGhee Tyson Airport and Knoxville Downtown Island Airport. There are also numerous smaller airports located near the city.

    • The largest airport in Knoxville is the McGhee Tyson Airport. Home to more than 9,000 feet of runways on 2,000 acres of land, McGhee Tyson Airport handles all of the commercial aircraft that fly into the region. Among the airlines that fly into McGhee Tyson Airport are Air Tran, United, Continental, American and Delta, as of 2010. In 2000, the airport completed a $70 million renovation of its concourses and terminals. McGhee Tyson Airport also employs more than 2,500 from the Knoxville area. Getting to the city from the airport is easy, as it is located only 12 miles away.

    Downtown Island Airport

    • Downtown Island Airport is located only three miles away from downtown Knoxville, on an island in the Tennessee River. While no commercial flights land at Downtown Island Airport, it used for private and corporate planes. According to the City of Knoxville, the airport houses more than 100 planes. The airport is home to only one runway of 3,500 feet. Downtown Island Airport is open every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. People with private planes can rent hangar space there as well. The more expensive rentals are shaded hangars. For those who want to save money, they can rent a spot in the community hangar.

    Other Regional Airports

    • The University of Tennessee Hospital also has a small airport at its medical center. The other airports in the area handle small, private plane traffic only. These airports include Knoxville Municipal Airport, Champ Field, Robertson Farm Airport and Sky Ranch Airport.
