Knoxville's branch of the University of Tennessee is the largest in the state, and serves as home to the all of the Volunteers' athletic squads. The Tennessee Volunteers football team plays its games in historic Neyland Stadium, which holds a capacity of more than 100,000 people, making it the ninth-largest non-car racing stadium in the world. The men's and women's basketball teams play their games at Thompson-Boling Arena, one of the largest basketball arenas in the United States. Thompson-Boling also hosts live concerts and conferences throughout the year. Tickets to Tennessee Volunteers games and events can be ordered through the University's athletic offices.

Founded in 1961, the annual Dogwood Arts Festival occurs during the spring in downtown Knoxville's Market Square and features art exhibitions created by local artisans in East Tennessee. Some of the exhibits include Art Source, which features works by art educators in Knox County, and Art & Architecture, a collection of pieces from national and international artists. Dogwood Arts Festival also fosters new talent by hosting the Student Art Show, which has pieces from elementary and college students. Live bluegrass and jazz music is performed at Rhythm & Blooms and KJO Jazz concerts.

Vacationers can take advantage of cycling opportunities and tours provided by Bike Knoxville. Tours offered by Bike Knoxville include the Historic Site & Graveyard Bike Tour, which allows cyclists to view historic attractions such as Market Square, the James White Fort, Bethel Confederate Burial site and the First Presbyterian Cemetery, which was founded in 1790. Bike rentals are available, and reservations for the tour are strongly recommended.

House Mountain State Park is a 500-acre recreational area that is less than 10 miles from the city center of Knoxville. Mountain climbing opportunities are available on the 2,100-foot peak. Hiking and cycling trails are also present on House Mountain, as well as picnic facilities. House Mountain is a popular spot for bird watchers, since the park is home to species such as warblers, scarlet tanagers and woodpeckers. Tent and RV camping facilities are available at Volunteer Park, approximately 30 minutes from House Mountain.
