Steamboat Vacations in Tennessee

These days, folks are likely to picture paddlewheel steamboats as casinos rather than recalling the time when they were the workhorses of inland waterways. Paddlewheelers were once the most elegant way to travel on freshwater waterways. Most famous were the "grand dames" that plied the Mississippi River for over 200 years. By 2007, only six commercial vessels still operated on Old Miss. Nevertheless, a steamboat-oriented vacation with Tennessee ports of call is still possible.
  1. Vacations to Go/Mississippi River Cruises

    • Mississippi River Cruises, which bought out Magestic American Lines' three Mississippi River paddlewheels in 2009, now owns three paddlewheel steamboats used for extended cruises. The American Queen, the flagship of the fleet, can carry up to 436 passengers who enjoy onboard amenities such as lounges, restaurants, casino, chapel, salon, library, movie theater, showroom, swimming pool, running track, fitness center, and children's playroom. The Mississippi Queen adds a disco and supervised youth program to their list of guest amenities and accommodates 416 passengers. The Delta Queen, more intimate than her big sisters with a 174 passenger capacity, manages to fit almost all of these amenities aboard as well.

The Tennessee shore of the Mississippi is part of the planned route for these ships, but because of the change in management home ports and ports of call had not been confirmed as of early 2010. Interested parties should contact the company for cruise itinerary updates.
