Chattanooga Metro Airport, also known as Lovell Field, is 10 miles from Hixson and is the largest nearby airport. It offers regional flights from American Eagle, Allegiant Air, Delta Air Lines and U.S. Airways as of 2010. Besides commercial flights, Chattanooga Metropolitan is also open to general aviation traffic, served by the airport's fixed-base operator (FBO), TAC Air. The airport also acts as a waypoint for FedEx flights traveling to the company's base operations in Memphis.
In 2007, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a report recommending the expansion of Atlanta's Hartfield-Jackson International Airport. Because Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport's two runways are large enough to accommodate modern passenger jets, it is one of several airports under consideration as a possible alternative site.
