Senior Citizen Activities in Conyers, Georgia

Conyers is located about 30 minutes east of Atlanta. Conyers is the county seat of Rockdale County. Senior citizens in Conyers have access to the Rockdale County Senior Citizens Center. The center provides a wide range of classes and activities at low or no cost.

  1. Clubs

    • Several clubs and organizations meet at the senior center. A game club meets Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to play cards and socialize. The bridge club meets every Monday and Tuesday, the canasta club meets on Wednesdays and the card club meets on Thursdays. A book club meets to discuss selected readings from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month. The Red Hat Society, a social group primarily comprised of women over 50, is also active in Conyers. The society meets by arrangement, either at the senior center or at any number of restaurants, movie theaters or stores.

    Fitness

    • The senior center offers classes such as yoga, line dancing and ballroom dancing. The Golden Trotters Walking Club meets Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the JP Carr Gym, and also plans special weekend walks. Members of the senior center can participate in indoor water aerobics at the Johnson Park Pool Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Johnson Park and the JP Carr Gym are Rockdale County Parks and Recreation Department facilities. Seniors meet for shuffleboard on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. at the Rockdale Government Annex in Conyers. The Rockdale County Senior Citizens Bowling Team meets Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. at the AMF American Lanes in Conyers.

    Learning

    • Besides fitness classes, the Senior Center offers classes in meditation, nutrition, foreign languages, cooking and crafts. The center includes a fully functioning ceramics room. Classes on computer basics and specific programs are offered through the computer lab. An AARP driver safety class and courses on senior CPR are offered several times throughout the year.

    Travel

    • The senior center also arranges group trips. These include weekly local shopping trips, day trips to points of interest and overnight trips. Annual trips include The Peach Trip, Apple Trip, Mystery Trip, and Christmas Light Trip. Other trips include tours of manufacturing facilities, museums and historic homes as well as visits to local fairs and festivals. All trips are strictly for individuals 55 years and older.

    Just for Fun

    • Seniors also can take advantage of breakfast and lunch, served at a discounted rate at the center. Senior-rate manicures are offered at the center on Tuesdays and a stylist provides cut, color and style services at a discounted rate twice per month. The center also hosts games and special events. Seniors elect a king and queen every Valentine’s Day to represent the senior community at local festivals and events throughout the year.
