Alaska offers many sport fishing opportunities to enthusiasts with its streams, lakes, rivers and bays. Although most known for giant salmon and halibut, Alaska also provides anglers with trout, northern pike and whitefish in addition to other varieties. Fishermen traveling to the state can find different lodging opportunities throughout popular areas; however, some of the best fishing is in remote areas. As a result, hundreds of fishing rental cabins can be found throughout the Alaska wilderness.
The Nancy Lake State Recreation Area is Alaska's only flat recreation area that contains several lakes for canoeing, fishing, hiking, camping and mushing. Nancy Lake is located about 60 miles from Anchorage and is accessible by car. There are thirteen public-use cabins available for rent year-round that are located on four of the larger lakes in the recreation area. Depending on location, the cabins are accessible by foot, canoe or floatplane in the summer and by skis, dogsled, airplane or snow vehicle in the winter. The insulated cabins are rustic, equipped only with bunks, tables, counters and wood burning fireplaces. Outhouses and fire rings are located outside each cabin. All water must be obtained from the lake and purified before use; guests must supply their own linens, trash bags and other necessities. Sport fishermen enjoy angling for lake trout, whitefish and northern pike.
