Ski Resorts Near Lake Tahoe in California

Straddling the Nevada-California state line in the Sierra Nevadas, Lake Tahoe offers something for everyone. Guests may head down the slopes at a ski resort on the California side during the day and head to a Nevada casino for dining and dice in the evening. The area is easily accessibly by highway from Sacramento and Reno.

    • This ski resort overlooks Lake Tahoe. At 10,067 feet, Heavenly is the highest mountain in Lake Tahoe, according to its website. Its 4800 acres of ski area makes it the largest in the state. Heavenly Mountain averages 360 inches of snowfall annually. The 94 trails range from open cruisers to chutes. Lessons for adults and children are available, as is child care. At night, visit one of the six casinos on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, and dine at one of the city's many restaurants.

    Alpine Meadow

    • Alpine Meadow offers complimentary shuttle service daily to the mountain from most Lake Tahoe lodges. The resort includes eight restaurants on the mountain. The main lodge hosts an indoor play area for children. Lessons for all level of skiers are available. Also on the mountain are three individual terrain parks for skiing and snowboarding, all groomed each evening. One terrain park is for kids and beginners, while another is suitable for intermediate skiers and the third is for the advanced level.

    Squaw Valley USA

    • Host to the 1960 Winter Olympics, this ski resort features a variety of accommodations. The Village at Squaw Valley has one, two and three bedroom condos for rent, with access to hot tubs and walking distance to restaurants and shops. The Christy Inn, Red Wolf Lodge and Resort at Squaw Creek are just a few of the many places to stay in the area. Ski lessons and clinics are offered for specific groups, including women, kids of various ages, advanced skiers and complete beginners. Private ski and snowboard lessons are available. Other winter activities at Squaw Valley include snowshoe tours, ice skating, snowtubing, and rides on their famous cable cars.
