How to Use Delta Skymiles for One Way Travel

Delta Airlines allows its Skymiles frequent flyer members to redeem miles for one way travel. This is ideal for frequent flyer members who do not have enough miles for a round trip ticket, or for those who are using a different airline for the return trip. And if there are no award tickets for one of your travel dates, you can get a one way award ticket, and buy the other ticket on Delta. There is no penalty for one way award ticket redemption and you need exactly half the number of miles you would need for a round trip ticket.

Log in to your Skymiles frequent flyer account. You need your Skymiles frequent flyer account number, plus a PIN (personal identification number). You create the PIN when you create your account: Delta assigns you the account number. Keep these numbers on your computer, and in a daily planner or secure spot on your desk.

Choose the "One-way" option when selecting award ticket reservations. If you can't find a suitable one-way flight for the outbound flight, try using miles for the returning flight.

    • 3

Click on the "Find Flights" tab. Delta Skymiles has three award levels in economy, depending on when you are flying. You can find low, medium and high award tickets. If you want to use the fewest miles, you might have to be flexible with your dates to find a low mileage award ticket.

Choose your flight by selecting and clicking "Redeem." Delta has a built-in default allowing you to select the flight, then back out if you realize you made a mistake. But once you choose the flight and click "Redeem," then click to finalize your selection, the miles are subtracted from your account and the ticket is yours.
