How to Book a SkyMiles Award Upgrade

SkyMiles is an incentive program created by Delta Air Lines to reward customers. With each flight on Delta, or a Delta partner such as KLM or Northwest Airlines, you are awarded a certain number of points. The number of flights you can book and receive miles for is limitless. More expensive and longer flights accrue more points. Visitors to Delta's website can set up a personal account to keep track of their miles. Using your miles for an upgrade means you are taking a coach ticket you have paid for and using miles instead of cash to upgrade it to business or first class.

  Decide what kind of flight you want to book. Because you are upgrading, choose whether you would like to upgrade from coach to business class or first class.

  Navigate to the Delta website and sign in using your username and personal identification number. Check the SkyMiles upgrade chart to see how many miles you need to book the upgrade you want.

  Check your SkyMiles balance to make sure you have enough miles to cover the expense. If you have booked your flight, upgrade your ticket. You can also buy your ticket and upgrade it at the same time. You can do this online, or if you prefer to speak to someone (recommended if it is your first time booking an upgrade), call Delta at 800-325-3999.
