How to Use United Mileage Plus Points

United Airlines' Mileage Plus program lets members accrue points when they fly, shop, stay in hotels and rent cars. These points can be used for free or discounted air travel, hotel stays and car rentals. Enroll in the Mileage Plus program online, free, by submitting a form. The name on your Mileage Plus account should match the name on your driver's license or passport. If you join the program after you fly on United, you can request miles retroactively.

Instructions

Book with miles on the United Airlines website. Search for Saver Awards if your dates are flexible; you can use fewer miles for these flights. Standard Awards require more miles. Saver Awards can be as low as 25,000 for a domestic round-trip ticket. United now also offers Star Alliance awards, which can be redeemed online for Continental and US Airways flights. Other Star Alliance partner awards can be redeemed by calling 800-United-1.

Choose the Miles & Money Award option if you don't have enough miles for a free ticket. You can use this option for direct flights on United and United Express-operated flights only, with no stop-overs. You have to use a credit card to pay for the money portion of the flight, and these awards are only available on some round-trip Saver Awards.

Book a free hotel, or a less-expensive Miles & Money hotel stay. Both of these awards can only be done online. Enter the city, dates you wish to travel and number of rooms required, and choose from a list of hotels at different mileage options.
