How to Transfer Points to United Airlines

Mileage Plus is the United Airlines frequent flier program. Members accumulate miles based on their travel that may be redeemed for upgrades and plane tickets at a later date. Miles do not expire as long as you accumulate at least one mile every 18 months. If you don't anticipate that you will be accumulating new miles in an 18-month period, you may want to transfer your miles to a friend or spouse. United has a Web-based system to facilitate the miles transfer process.

Decide how many miles you want to transfer. There is no minimum transfer, but there is a maximum of 15,000 miles transferred into any account per year. The 15,000-mile maximum includes transfers from all sources. If the account you want to give the points to has reached their limit, you will receive a message and your account won't be charged for the excess.

Calculate your fees. The charge to transfer miles is 15 cents per mile plus a $35 transfer fee.

Make the transfer. Transfers may be done online or by calling the Mileage Plus customer service center. You will need the Mileage Plus account number and email address of the person you want to transfer your points to. Transfer fees can be paid by credit card. It takes about 48 hours for the points to show up in the account they are being transferred to, so plan accordingly.
