Frequent flier programs allow you to earn miles that you can apply towards free travel. For example, if you fly 5,000 miles you earn 5,000 frequent flier miles. Nearly every airline has a frequent flier program. You can earn miles flying on your frequent flier membership airline or any of their partner airlines. Signing up for a frequent flier program is simple and will allow you to reap rewards from traveling.
Choose which frequent flier program you would like to join. If you predominantly fly one airline, you should join that airline's program. If you typically fly an airline that is a member of the One World or Star Alliance partnership, you can join a frequent flier program of any member airline. You can earn miles on any partner airline and redeem miles for free travel on partner airlines. You can see all partner airlines by visiting One World at http://www.oneworld.com/ow/ffp, or Star Alliance at http://www.staralliance.com/en/benefits/frequent-flyer/.
Go to the website of the airline whose frequent flier program you would like to join. Click on a tab or link on the homepage that reads something like "Frequent Flier."
Click on a link that reads something like "Register Now" or "Sign Up." This will start the registration process.
Follow the prompts and enter your required personal information, including first and last name, email address and home address, if necessary. You will need to create a user name and password for your frequent flier account. The registration process is simple and not longer than a few pages. You will receive your account number at the end of the registration process or by email shortly after you register.
