Airports in North California

Culturally and ecologically diverse, Northern California is also home to a wide range of airports offering domestic, international and general aviation services. From long-haul flights into the Bay Area to smaller regional services in rural upstate California, travelers visiting the region have an array of transportation options at their disposal.
  1. San Francisco International Airport

    • San Francisco's southern neighbor--LAX--may get all the glory, but in 2010 San Francisco International Airport was one of the top 25 busiest airports in the world. The airport processes millions of passengers every year and has direct flights to every inhabited continent except Africa. San Francisco International Airport also acts as a hub for United Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines.

The airport operates four asphalt runways, including two that accommodate wide-bodied jets. It also has transportation links to the surrounding Bay Area via CalTrain, SamTrans and the BART system.

    Oakland International Airport

    • Across the bay from SFO is Oakland International Airport, another major travel hub for Northern California. Unlike San Francisco Airport, Oakland is served primarily by low-cost carriers. Both Jetblue Airways and Southwest Airlines are based there, with Southwest operating its own terminal.

Oakland International Airport processed nearly 15 million passengers in 2007, the most ever (see Reference 4). The airport has four runways, including an 11,600-foot extended runway for long-haul jets.

    Sacramento International Airport

    • Located further inland than the region's other major airports, Sacramento International Airport is a hub for low-cost carriers and regional air traffic. Southwest Airlines has a significant presence at the airport, as well as United Express, Delta Connection and US Airways Express.

Sacramento International Airport operates two parallel, 8,600-foot runways. Although they can accommodate long-haul flights, as of 2010 the airport does not offer any international services.

    Arcata-Eureka Airport

    • Arcata-Eureka Airport is one of the largest airports in upstate California, serving more than 200,000 passengers in 2009. The airport is located in the small town of McKinleyville, several miles north of Arcata.

Arcata-Eureka Airport has two asphalt runways capable of handling short- and medium-range jets. As of 2010, Skywest Airlines and Horizon Air offer flights from Arcata-Eureka. The airport also has a U.S. Customs border point, although the airport has no scheduled international arrivals.
