The Carnival Legend is part of Carnival Cruise Line's Spirit class of ships. She was built by Finland's Kvaerner shipyard at a cost of $375 million dollars, and launched in August 2002. The ship measures 963 feet in length and weighs 88,500 gross tons. She is capable of speeds of up to 25 miles per hour (41 kilometers per hour), and can hold 2,200 passengers and 930 crew members. Over 80 percent of the staterooms on the ship feature ocean views and private balconies.
The Carnival Legend sails year-round out of Tampa, Florida. The ship follows a six-night, seven-day itinerary to the Western Caribbean. Port stops include Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Isla Roatan and Belize, with two days of the cruise labeled as "Fun Days at Sea." While the ship is docked at each port, passengers can embark on shore excursions arranged by Carnival, or may choose to go off and explore on their own. Shore excursions on this cruise include scuba diving, island tours, catamaran rides, parasailing and deep sea fishing.
Guests have their choice of three exquisite on-board restaurants. The main dining room is called Truffles Restaurant. This two-story art-deco dining room features beautiful painted ceilings and a variety of freshly prepared foods. The Unicorn Cafe on the Lido Deck acts as the ship's buffet, with many international options as well as classic buffet fare like salads and fruit. For a more intimate dining experience, guests can visit the Golden Fleece Supper Club, an elegant steakhouse located under a huge red glass dome.
The Carnival Legend features 16 different bars and lounges for guests looking to unwind. Satchmo's Club is one of the most popular spots on the ship, with daily live jazz and decor that resembles a classic New Orleans nightspot. Billie's Piano Bar, a tribute to Billie Holiday, features live singing and piano tunes each night. Guests can get in on the action and sing along, making for a rocking good time. The Firebird Lounge offers nightly comedy shows, and the Medusa's Lair Dance Club provides a classic disco experience complete with the latest hit music.
The Legend's two-story fitness center features cardio equipment, weights and a variety of classes ranging from yoga to step aerobics. Next door is the Fountains of Youth spa, home to a steam room, sauna and full-service salon. Out on the open deck, guests will find a jogging track, ping-pong tables and a basketball court. The ship features three full-size pools, two children's pools and a water slide for guests looking to cool off. A variety of duty-free shops and a large casino round out the ship's most popular amenities.
