How to Stop a Camper From Leaking

RV campers are designed to protect you from the elements. Due to sun and UV ray exposure, camper exteriors break down over time, sometimes causing small leaks in roof vents, around windows and at corners and seams between roof and walls. Repair these camper leaks to bring the camper back to its original watertight qualities. To isolate the leak, spray water from a garden hose in the areas where leaks are suspected.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the camper in a flat area or parking lot near your workshop and garden hose. If the leak areas are not known, spray the roof vents with the garden hose and assign an assistant to stay in the RV to spot the leaks. Give the bucket to the assistant to catch drops from leaking ceiling areas and windows. Circle the leak areas in pencil.

    • 2

Cut away old and compromised caulking in the leak area. Use the utility knife. Take care not to cut the roof itself, or around window sills and panes.

    • 3

Pull off the old caulking around the roof vents, windows or wherever the leaks rest. Load the caulk gun with the silicone, waterproof caulk.

    • 4

Caulk the edges around the roof vent, windows or where the leaks are and let dry. Add another coat of caulking on the interior of the RV, under the leak area. If caulking windows, caulk around the edges inside and out on the RV.

    • 5

Let the caulk dry then spray the leak areas with the garden hose to test the repair.
