How to Connect 6V Batteries in a Serial

Recreational vehicles often connect several six-volt batteries together to produce the power needed to supply the cabin with many luxuries. Four six-volt batteries also produce 24 volts of power to start big rig diesel engines. A pair of six-volt batteries joined in a series stores more energy than a single 12-volt. The added storage of series-connected batteries makes it suitable to store solar power. A simple series connection is four 1.5-volt batteries stacked, positive terminals to negative terminals, in the tube of a flashlight to produce six volts.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the batteries next to each other. Position the terminals so that the positive terminal of one is close to the negative terminal of the other.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the positive terminal of one battery and the negative terminal of the other. Acquire a battery cable of the necessary length with a positive terminal on one end and a negative terminal on the other.

    • 3

Join the batteries together by bolting the cable to the positive terminal of one and the negative terminal of the other. If the connection was for three batteries, six volts each, the joined batteries make 18 volts at the two open terminals.

    • 4

Connect the terminals of a vehicle or camper to the remaining open positive and negative terminals of the married batteries to produce the power needed.
