How to Install Cabinet Locks in an RV

Recreational Vehicles (RV's) travel down highways and bumpy campground roads. The cabinets in an RV can pop open when the vehicle leans, causing the contents to spill onto the floor. The solution is cabinet cam locks that keep the doors closed.

Things You'll Need

  • Carpenters pencil
  • Drill
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • 5/8-inch paddle bit
  • 5/8-inch cam lock
  • Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the cabinet lock destination with a carpenter's pencil on the cabinet door.

    • 2

Drill a pilot hole on the mark with a 1/4-inch drill bit all the way through the cabinet door.

    • 3

Change the 1/4-inch drill bit to a 5/8-inch paddle bit on the drill.

    • 4

Place the point of the paddle bit inside the pilot hole and drill through the entire cabinet door.

    • 5

Open the cabinet door and support it open with one hand.

    • 6

Push the cam lock into the hole in the cabinet door with the thumb latch positioned vertically on the outside of the cabinet door.

    • 7

Slide the rubber gasket on the backside of the cam lock.

    • 8

Place the locking arm over the cam lock at the rear inside the cabinet. Position the locking arm so it is horizontal on bottom locking cabinets or vertical on cabinet doors.

    • 9

Slide the short Phillips screw into the back of the locking arm and into the lock.

    • 10

Tighten the screw in a clockwise direction.
