My RV's Toilet Won't Hold Water in the Bowl

RV travel has become the preferred method of vacationing for many families. Recreational vehicles are popular with senior citizens who need comfort measures, as well as families with young children that need space. While an RV features numerous amenities that make it a popular travel method, there is still maintenance that you must perform to ensure that your trip runs smoothly. A leaky RV toilet bowl can cause your clean water tank to empty sooner, wasting precious resources as you travel. There are several things you can do to troubleshoot this common issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the bolts that hold your RV toilet to the bathroom floor. Loosen these bolts slightly with the crescent wrench. Bolts that are too tight can cause the toilet bowl seal to close incompletely.

    • 2

Unbend the tip of a metal hanger, creating a hook, or use a commercially-available RV toilet groove tool. Open the toilet valve and sweep the hook into the area around the toilet bowl seal, catching and pulling out any toilet paper or debris that is blocking the seal from closing completely.

    • 3

Apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the valve area. This can help the toilet bowl valve operate more smoothly and close completely.

    • 4

Change how you flush the RV toilet. Instead of lifting your foot off the flushing pedal, allow your foot to slide off the pedal so that the valve springs quickly close.
