Calculate the port city easiest to get the Twin Otter to. Most Hawaii shipping agencies use Seattle, San Francisco or Los Angeles for the port of departure. Determine where the easiest port is to bring the aircraft.
Contact the shipping agency to ensure the port of your choosing accommodates aircraft shipping. Not all ports are equipped to handle items such as the Twin Otter.
Ask the shipping agency for services such as packaging and craning the aircraft onto the cargo ship. If they do not provide this service ask them who contracts for this and make the needed arrangements for the crane or packing agent to meet at the docks to prep the aircraft and get it onto the ship.
Go to the cargo ship on the date the aircraft is scheduled to be placed on the ship. If you cannot make it, send a representative for your company or business. Get all paperwork for the shipping. Insure the aircraft for shipping should there be high seas mishaps. The Twin Otter is an investment. Protect it as such.
Write down all shipping dates and estimated time of arrival into Hawaii. If the aircraft needs a crane to be removed from the cargo ship and the shipping agency does not provide this service, make the needed arrangements at least three to six weeks ahead of the scheduled arrival.
Receive the aircraft in Hawaii and go over the aircraft taking pictures with an agent from the shipping agency to ensure no damage has occurred. Keep the pictures as proof of any damage should it have occurred during the transport.
