How to Stay Occupied on a Train

Do you dread train rides? Do you find them long and boring? Surely, sitting on a train for an extended period of time can be dull. However, the more aware you are of your confinement to a train car, the more negative your ride will be. So instead of considering travel to be a waste of time, you can use that timely productively. Let the purpose of your ride be relaxation. Work and responsibilities are crammed into every minute of your day and chances to relax are few. You can change your train riding experience into a positive one by having a few things handy.

Get a window seat. Look out the window and let your mind wander. Relax your muscles and sit comfortably while gazing at the sky, or the trees or any other aspect of nature. Appreciate the opportunity to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Listen to music. Put on your headphones and allow yourself to feel the rhythm of the music. You should prepare for your trip by having your favorite songs readily available. Light music, classical or smooth jazz may help to calm you.

    • 3

Write down your thoughts. If you are having trouble getting relaxed because you have thoughts running through your mind or worries that you cannot control, write them down. A notebook, steno pad or even a scrap of paper will suffice. The purpose is to put your thoughts in writing to release them from your mind. Making a list of things you have to do is a good way to use your time productively.

Bring reading material. Similar to music, light reading is recommended. Choose something that interests you. Short stories are suitable because, depending on the length of your ride, you can read it from start to finish. Newspapers are also good because you can stay on top of current events. In addition to articles, magazines offer Q&A sections and self-help tests that can be taken.

Close your eyes. Put your head back and get comfortable. Consider taking a brief nap. Sitting up may not be the best way to get a good rest, but 15 to 20 minutes of shut eye could energize you when you reach your destination.
