Use of Friction Sway Control

When a vehicle hauls a trailer, the towed portion functions as a sail, drifting with the wind gusts. This necessitates the use of a friction sway control device to control dangerous movement from side to side.
  1. Function

    • A friction sway control device is a mechanism that holds a steel rod inside, along with a friction pad. As the trailer begins to sway, the rod and pad grate against one another, effectively stopping the dangerous movement from side to side.

    Features

    • Only one friction sway control mechanism is necessary for trailers of 6,000 pounds or less. It is attached between the trailer and weight distribution head, or specialized hitch, which is part of the towing vehicle.

    Considerations

    • Etrailer recommends two sway control devices for trailers over 26 feet, even if they are within the weight limits of 6,000 pounds. This recommendation also applies to trailers between the weights of 6,000 and 10,000 pounds. Using two friction sway controls offers the correct amount of strength to hold the trailer steady.
