How to Register a US Car in Germany

If you are moving to Germany from the United States, you will need to keep your U.S. registration for the vehicle with you until it is registered in Germany. This will prove ownership of the car as well as proof that the vehicle has been through proper channels up to the point of import. Germany is not concerned with registering vehicles that will not be in the country for long, but if you are planning on an extended stay, it will be required.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for one year to register your car in Germany. A car that has been in the country less than a year only needs a registration from the United States with a Germany translation.

    • 2

Get the car inspected and receive a certificate stating that the car meets the country's standards.

    • 3

Go to the registration office after a year in Germany. The office in German is called the Kraftfahrzeugzulassungsstelle.

    • 4

Take to the registration office your identification, the inspection certificate, insurance papers, residency papers, U.S. registration and its German translation, customs paperwork and ownership papers. You will also need to bring the receipt of duty paid if it was necessary when you had it shipped over. If the car was bought in the U.S. and had 6,000 miles on it before shipping, then it is considered used and no duty is required.

    • 5

Fill out the registration paperwork and give it back to the clerk.
