El Cosmico, a boutique hotel and campground in Marfa, Texas, has two Apache-style teepees available for overnight stays. While the construction of these teepees follows historic principles, the 22-foot diameter interiors provide a variety of modern comforts, including brick floors with cow-skin rugs, queen-size beds with heated mattress pads, leather loveseats, electrical outlets, day beds and space heaters for the cold Marfa nights. Guests at El Cosmico have access to outdoor bathroom and shower facilities -- and even a claw-foot tub in an attractive, grapevine-shrouded enclosure. The 18-acre campground also features a hammock area and outdoor kitchen with grills and a communal refrigerator.
Located in Seguin, Geronimo Creek Retreat offers luxury camping in four teepees erected amidst pecan trees. From the outside, these teepees pass muster for simple, nomadic dwellings, while the fully furnished interiors offer a host of amenities such as kitchenettes with sinks and stovetops, televisions and private bathrooms. Each teepee can accommodate up to six guests with two queen-size beds and a pullout couch, and comes with an outdoor grill and picnic table. The 4-acre Geronimo Creek Retreat campground also features a picturesque creek with a swimming dock, hot tub and recreation room.
Travelers to Brownwood can experience a bed-and-breakfast style stay in a well-appointed teepee near Lake Brownwood. As the sole accommodation in a private campground, this teepee provides an ideal setting for a secluded romantic getaway. The 22-foot-diameter interior has a rock floor, camp chairs, lighting and electrical outlets. Guests must provide their own sleeping bags, but free firewood is available for the outdoor fire pit. The proprietors of the teepee provide a full breakfast on the garden deck of the nearby main house, and guests have access to a private, heated shower and restroom.
The 10 teepees at Teepee Motel and RV Park in Wharton are spaced around a large, well-maintained field that preserves the look and feel of a campground facility. Constructed in 1942, the Teepee Motel is one of the last surviving examples of themed roadside motels once common sights along America's highways. Thought it closed in the 1980s, the newly renovated Teepee Motel has reopened. Each stucco teepee contains a private bathroom, full-size bed, couch, refrigerator and microwave, and guests can roast marshmallows or cook burgers on outdoor grills.
