Campgrounds Near Fox Lake, Illinois

Home to one of Al Capone’s former hideouts, Fox Lake, Illinois, became a notorious hangout for prohibition gangsters in the early 1900s. The area now draws in visitors to breathe in the fresh air while hiking through nature preserves and exploring the chain of lakes. While campers won’t find campgrounds in the town itself, several lie within 20 minutes of Fox Lake.
  1. Peace in the Park

    • Fall asleep to the sounds of nature at Chain O’Lakes State Park, 5 miles away in Spring Grove. The campground includes five areas with a total of 238 sites, each with a grill and picnic table. If you seek some of the comforts of home, rent a two-room cabin, which includes two bunk beds, a queen bed, electricity, ceiling fans, picnic table and cooking/camping grill. A bathhouse with showers and flush toilets is available on the campground. Hike or bike the trail system, or bring your horse and explore the 8-mile equestrian trail. Launch your boat or fish from the pier for bass, crappie, walleye, catfish, northern pike, bullhead and muskie. In winter, try your hand at ice fishing, ski through the wilderness, or sled down the hill near the park office.

    Family Fun

    • Bring your radio-controlled car and race around the dirt track at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo, about 5 miles from Fox Lake. Lounge on the sand beach or take a dip in the cool waters, then play a game of miniature golf and watch an outdoor movie. Tent and RV sites are available along the water and in wooded areas. Tent sites are shaded and include water, electric, picnic table and campfire ring. Full and partial hookup sites are available for RVs, and restrooms and showers are on the property.

    Riverside Relaxation

    • Park your RV along the water, pitch your tent or stay in a cabin at Fox River Recreation in Antioch, about 9 miles away. Partial and full hookup sites are available, and one- and two-bedroom cabins include a kitchen and bathroom. Bring your boat or rent a canoe on-site to cruise the waters of Fox River, and reel in muskie, small and largemouth bass, and walleye. Cool off with a round of pool, or battle it out on video games in the game room. Take a refreshing dip in the pool, or let the kids run wild on the playground. Coin-operated showers and laundry are available.

    Rustic Romance

    • Take a short 18-mile drive across the state border to Wisconsin to stay at Happy Acres Campground in Bristol. Electric and nonelectric sites are available for tents, pop-ups and RVs, and all sites include a grill, fire ring and picnic table. Add a little romance and book a rustic cabin with a view of the pond. Cabin amenities include bathroom, kitchen, utensils, refrigerator and TV. Relax and do a little fishing in one of the two ponds, splash around in the pool or hike the nature trails. Both kids and adults can have a blast jumping on the giant inflatable pillow or playing a round of miniature golf.
