Reserve a spot at the Celina Lake Recreation Area, near the community of St. Croix, which is divided into two "loops": the North Face and South Slope. On the north side, pitch your tent. On the south side, park your RV. Boat or sail on either Celina Lake or Indian Lake, or unfold your camp chair to take in the aroma of the pine-filled woods. Hike one of two trails or fish. The season runs from April 15 through Oct. 15.
Plan on seeing nature, even on horseback, at German Ridge near Cannelton. Hike the 25-mile German Ridge Trail, or ride your mountain bike or horse along the path. Hitch your horse to a post; there aren't any corrals. The small German Ridge Lake lends itself to swimming but no boating. This site remains open all year. It does not offer RV hookups.
The 41-acre Saddle Lake Recreation Area, near Tell City, has narrow roads; don't plan on bringing your RV. It's better to hike in and buy your supplies at the market near the entrance. Relax, bird watch, see some of the area wildlife or enjoy pan fishing. This site remains open all year.
Extensive camping areas for both tents and RVs surround the Tipsaw Lake Recreational Area, near St. Croix. Hike the seven-mile Tipsaw Trail or go swimming or boating in the lake. According to the U.S. Forest Service, this area contains access to the beach for wheelchairs. Visitors can sit in their chairs on a bench that is enclosed by a stone wall with rails along the waterfront. The season runs from April 15 to Oct. 15.
