Akeley, Minnesota, is a town with something to offer the outdoor enthusiast. At one time, the largest sawmill in Minnesota was in Akeley and this helped to create much of the history on display today. The fictional character Paul Bunyan is popular in Akeley and the Paul Bunyan Museum is dedicated to the history of Akeley, and the nearby Paul Bunyan State Forest has nature trails. Several campgrounds in the Akeley area offer a variety of camping options. Guests in these campgrounds can also visit the 32,000-acre Itasca State Park to see the 2,000-acre wilderness sanctuary.

    • The Akeley City Park and Campground has 24 lakeside RV campsites along with tent camping. The RV campsites have electrical connections, water hookups and fire pits for campfires. Tent campers have access to electrical connections at lakeside tent sites. The park offers a dump station, a boat launch, restrooms with showers, a fish cleaning station, nature trails for hiking and bicycling, a beach, lake boating, lake swimming and lake fishing. Pets are welcome. Reservations are required.

    • Moore Springs Resorts is on the banks of Howard Lake and has electrical connections, water hookups and sewer service for all of the RV and tent campsites. Campers can choose a wooded campsite or a site down by the lake. Resort features include boat docks, picnic tables, fire pits for campfires, lake fishing, lake swimming and nature trails for hiking and bicycling. Pets are not allowed. Reservations are recommended.

    • Gulch Lake Campground and Day Use Area has 8 campsites designed primarily for tent campers. No utility hookups are available. The park has drinking water, fire pits, picnic tables, a vault toilet that is similar to an outhouse, access to Gulch Lake for boating and fishing, trash pick-up and nature trails for hiking and bicycling. Pets are welcome. This is a first come, first served facility with no reservations taken.
