Camping at Blue Lakes in Lake County

Dip your toes in the water or plunge in for a swim at Northern California's Blue Lakes. The two lakes -- known as Upper Blue Lake and Lower Blue Lake -- are part of a chain of lakes that lie midway between Lake Mendocino and California's largest lake, Clear Lake. Shaded by pines and sparkling bright blue, these smaller lakes offer opportunities to pursue your favorite water sports and stay for days on end in one of several campgrounds.

  1. Where the Sun Rises

    • Whenever snow doesn't block the way, enjoy rustic camping at one of four campgrounds along the shores of the Blue Lakes. A 16-site campground with a boat ramp lies along the eastern shore of Lower Blue Lake. Middle Creek Campground lies along the creek connecting the two lakes, with five units. Two campgrounds on the upper lake lie near the dam and on the north end of the lake, with 57 sites between them. All sites are equipped with picnic tables, bear boxes, grills and fire rings. Vault restrooms and drinkable water are available at all campgrounds.

    The Deep South

    • The southern shore of Upper Blue Lake is home to Pine Acres Resort, where you can pitch your tent on a grassy lawn along the lake's edge. The primitive sites have barbecue grills and picnic tables, and are next to the swimming beach. A few RV sites have full hookups, and others just water, electric and cable TV. Most RV sites lie side by side, with a few premium sites tucked by themselves along the lake's shore. Hot showers and dump station are provided on-site. Community amenities include a swimming beach with offshore swim dock, fishing dock and clubhouse with sun deck, accommodating groups of 10 to 100 people.

    Below The Narrows

    • Midway along Upper Blue Lake, the Narrows Lodge Resort tucks into the western shore. The resort's camping area has spaces suitable for tents or RVs, with rates the same for each. Set up along the lakefront or on a lush lawn where your site will access water and electricity. The resort rents a variety of watercraft to enjoy the lake, including motor boats, patio boats, canoes and hydro bikes. On-site amenities include an arcade, barbecue area and a large grassy beach with shaded tables and chairs.

    Take a Step Back

    • Located 1 1/2 miles from the Blue Lakes, Kelly's Family Campground has 78 sites to suit a variety of camping styles. Water and electric service are available for RVs up to 40 feet long. The tent area has 30 primitive grassy sites, shaded by mature trees. The campground provides barbecues and fire rings at each site, and amenities include hot showers, flush restrooms and a laundromat. Cool off from summer heat in a private 2-acre pond, and enjoy outdoor sport courts and trails through natural areas, where you'll see a variety of birds and wildlife.
