How to Get Water From a Hand Pump

If you enjoy camping and have been to many different parks throughout the country, you probably have experience with a hand water pump. These pumps are typically metal and run out of the ground with a movable arm that is used to pump water up from an underground well.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bucket directly under the spout of the water hand pump.

    • 2

Raise the arm of the pump up as far as it will go.

    • 3

Force the arm pump back down towards the rest of the metal pump. Raise the pump right back into the air and force it back down again, all in one quick motion.

    • 4

Repeat this process until water begins to come out of the water pump. Doing the up and down pumping motion will create pressure and force the water up and out the spout. Depending on how deep the water is and how far it already is up the pipe, you may have to work at this for a while.

    • 5

Remove the bucket of water from the water pump when you are finished and return to your camp site.
