Mullins and the surrounding cities and towns in the coastal region of South Carolina thrived during the late19th and 20th centuries thanks to tobacco farming. Today, the local economy has shifted toward tourism, and some of the lavish homes built by prosperous families are now boutique hotels that offer visitors a close-up look at part of the South's cultural heritage.
  1. Webster Manor

    • Local residents in Mullins know and love Webster Manor for its weekday lunch buffet that serves Southern dishes such as rutabagas, fried chicken, turnips, gizzards and okra.Travelers appreciate the quiet atmosphere, and the large rooms with four poster beds, claw-foot tubs and fireplaces. A front porch lined with rocking chairs gives the inn the traditional small-town touch. Webster Manor is located off of North Main Street and is within walking distance of the post office, library and several local restaurants. A number of shops, including the Mullins Antique Mall, are a few blocks further up the street.

    The Decanter Inn

    • Built in 1911 as a private home and used during the '50s as a boarding house for tobacco pickers, the Decanter Inn is now a guest house and restaurant. Rooms are decorated with antiques, plush quilts and all the usual appliances and conveniences found in large hotels. Guests are welcome to a complimentary gourmet breakfast, with fresh-baked muffins and entrees such as Eggs Benedict and quiche.The restaurant also serves an afternoon high tea and dinner. The inn welcomes children and pets, and babysitting services are available.

    The Grove, The Inn on Harlee

    • Located in Marion, about nine miles from Mullins, The Grove is a former family estate with a late 19th century Eastlake style mansion that has been converted to a guest house. Visitors can explore The Grove's five acres of woods and gardens, and roam three open parlors on the inn's first floor. Rooms are individually decorated with Victorian-era furniture and feature details such a private patio, Jacuzzi, fireplaces and window seats. The kitchen serves a complimentary three-course gourmet breakfast and rooms are stocked with homemade cookies, chocolates and beverages. Nearby attractions include the Marion County Museum, the Darlington Raceway, and Betwixt the Rivers, a kayak and canoeing tour center. The Russel Stover candy company runs an outlet shop on the main road from Marion to Mullins.

    Abingdon Manor

    • The Abingdon Manor was originally the home of James Manning, one of the wealthiest residents of Latta, a small town about 14 miles north of Mullins. Today, the American Automobile Association ranks it as a four-diamond hotel and restaurant. It took three years to build the house, with its 25 fireplaces, 40 columns and 2,000 feet of veranda. Visitors have a choice of seven individually designed guest rooms furnished with Victorian art and antiques. Breakfast comes with the room, and guests can reserve a table in the dining room for a set-rate, six-course dinner.The restaurant serves classic dishes, such as Lobster Thermidor, Beef Wellington and coq au vin.
